Dermaplaning is a form of superficial manual exfoliation used to remove dead skin cells and fine vellus hairs (which can often trap dead skin cells, make-up, oil and cast shadow).
What are the benefits of a dermaplaning facial treatment?
It is suitable for all skin types and helps to improve skin texture by removing rough dry skin to reveal brighter, fresher, smoother and healthier looking skin. Dermaplaning can be done alone or combined with a chemical peel (such as a mandelic acid peel; something that I can discuss with you at our initial consultation).
It is a great way to help enhance the action of serums and topical skincare products, prepare for a special occasion as make-up can glide on more smoothly and uniformly, as an introductory aesthetic treatment and as an alternative to other depilatory treatments.
Before & Immediately After Dermaplaning Treatment
Will my facial grow back thicker or darker?
No. Unlike waxing, threading and other depilatory treatments, hair does not grow back thicker or darker as the hair follicle is not affected by the treatment.
What happens during a dermaplaning facial treatment?
After your skin is thoroughly cleansed and allowed to dry, an Aesthetician grade, sterile scalpel (blade) is used to gently scrape the outer most layer of epidermis (the stratum corneum) which also removes vellus hairs in the process. The treatment is not painful and numbing creams are not required.
After the treatment, I re-cleanse your skin and apply a soothing hydrating mask, followed by an SPF.
What areas can be treated?
I can treat the face including forehead and neck area. Due to the contours of the face, certain areas such as the eyelids and nose are not treatable using this method. When it comes to treating close to the hairline and sideburn region, I will always ask your preference.
Before & After Dermaplaning Treatment
How long does the treatment take and what can I expect after a dermaplaning facial treatment?
The treatment takes between 45-60 minutes. My signature Glow facial treatment takes approximately 75 minutes.
There is generally no down time and I take precautions to ensure that your skin is well hydrated and calm following each treatment. However, you may experience some dryness or even very mild peeling between treatments. More sensitive skin may experience some redness after the first couple of treatments, however, this usually settles within 2 to 3 hours.
How can I look after my skin after a dermaplaning facial treatment?
Avoid touching your face to prevent introducing infection
Avoid make-up for at least 24 hours or until any redness has settled completely
Cleanse your skin twice daily using a gentle cleanser. Avoid active ingredients such as AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) or Vitamin A, and manual exfoliation for at least 48 hours after the treatment
Make sure to apply a mineral sunscreen ideally factor 50 with a high PA rating daily for at least 2 weeks and avoid direct sun exposure for at least 24 hours after treatment
Avoid tanning beds Avoid aerobic exercise or vigorous physical activity for at least 24 hours or until any redness has completely settled
