Skin Treatments Before Christmas: When to Start and How to Plan

Written by Dr. Maha Shariff · November 2, 2026 · Treatment Planning

Is there still time for a skin treatment before the festive season? How microneedling, chemical peels, skin boosters and muscle-relaxing treatments differ in recovery time, and how to plan around your skin rather than a date.

As we move into November, a question I often hear in clinic is whether there is still time to have a skin treatment before the festive season.

The answer is yes. There are several options to consider, depending on your skin, the treatment and how much recovery time you can allow.

At Dr Maha Aesthetics, my doctor-led skin clinic in Acton, West London, I help patients plan treatments around their individual skin concerns, goals and circumstances.

Why planning matters

There are a few things I consider when planning treatments around an important occasion:

  • How the treatment works: Some treatments stimulate collagen production or improve skin hydration, with changes developing gradually over several weeks or longer.
  • Recovery time: Depending on the treatment, there may be temporary redness, dryness, flaking, swelling or bruising.
  • Your previous experience: If you have had a treatment before, we have a better understanding of how your skin responds. If it is your first time, I would generally recommend allowing more time for recovery.
  • Your current skin condition: Existing inflammation, sensitivity, pigmentation concerns and your skincare routine can all influence treatment choice and timing.

It is also worth remembering that looking after your skin is not just about having it look its best for a particular occasion. While feeling a little more refreshed for the festive season can be lovely, my focus is on maintaining skin health and taking a proactive approach to looking after your skin over time.

You do not need to complete an entire course before December. You can start now and continue your treatment plan afterwards. The important thing is to plan around your skin and your individual circumstances, rather than rushing to meet a particular date.

Treatment timing at a glance

TreatmentGeneral planning guidance
Dermapen4 MicroneedlingAllow around 1-2 weeks for initial recovery. Improvements continue over subsequent months.
NeoStrata ProSystem Glycolic PeelsGenerally little to no visible downtime.
Obagi Blue Peel RadianceAllow for possible tightness or mild flaking over the following days.
NeoStrata ProSystem Retinol PeelsAllow up to around 10 days for visible flaking.
The Perfect PeelAllow at least two weeks for visible peeling and initial recovery.
Stylage HydroAllow around 7-10 days for possible injection-site reactions or bruising.
Profhilo and SunekosPlan around the full treatment course and allow additional time for improvements to develop afterwards.
Muscle-relaxing treatment for lines and wrinklesGenerally allow 3-4 weeks for new patients and around 2 weeks for existing patients, depending on previous response.
Dermaplaning and Glow FacialsMay be considered as individual treatments including closer to an occasion, following assessment.
LEDCan be incorporated into a treatment plan or considered as an individual session, depending on your skin.

These timings are a general guide rather than guaranteed recovery times. Individual responses vary.

Microneedling

Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the natural repair response and supporting collagen production.

You may notice some early improvement in brightness within the first one to two weeks, but changes in skin texture and quality develop more gradually, generally becoming more noticeable from around 6-12 weeks and continuing over the following months.

The skin is typically red for the first day or two and for many people has largely returned to baseline within seven days.

For maintenance treatments, we can take your previous recovery experience into account when planning the timing.

You can read more in my guide to how microneedling works.

Chemical peels

Not all chemical peels are the same and recovery periods can vary considerably depending on the type of peel and your individual skin response.

The peels I offer include:

  • NeoStrata ProSystem Glycolic peels: Superficial peels that generally involve little to no visible downtime.
  • Obagi Blue Peel Radiance: A salicylic acid-based peel. Some people experience temporary tightness or mild visible flaking over the following days.
  • NeoStrata ProSystem Retinol peels: These can produce more noticeable flaking, which may continue for up to around 10 days.
  • The Perfect Peel: A medium-depth peel where visible peeling is an expected part of the process. I would generally recommend allowing at least two weeks before an important occasion.

Even after visible peeling has settled, the skin continues to remodel and change over the following weeks and months.

The choice of peel and timing will depend on your skin type, current condition, treatment history and any tendency towards pigmentation. Skin preparation with topical skincare may be required.

Skin boosters and injectable hydration treatments

Treatments such as Stylage Hydro, Profhilo and Sunekos are used to support skin hydration and quality, although they work in different ways and have different treatment protocols.

Stylage Hydro can be considered as an individual treatment for skin hydration. Profhilo and Sunekos are generally undertaken as courses, with the treatment schedule and subsequent improvements extending over several weeks.

For example, Profhilo is usually administered as two sessions spaced four weeks apart. With Sunekos, the course is generally three sessions completed over approximately four weeks. Improvements in skin quality develop progressively, often becoming more apparent around four to six weeks after completing the course.

As these are injectable treatments, temporary swelling, small, raised areas at injection points or bruising can occur. I would generally suggest allowing at least a week to 10 days before an important occasion.

Consultation for lines and wrinkles

Some patients also enquire about treatment for facial lines and wrinkles, sometimes referred to as anti-wrinkle or muscle-relaxing treatments, particularly if they have had treatment previously and are considering their next appointment ahead of the festive season. For existing patients, around two weeks may be appropriate, depending on their previous response. This allows time for any temporary injection-site reactions or bruising to settle.

An initial consultation is required for new patients to assess suitability and expectations. Where appropriate, muscle-relaxing injections may be discussed as one of the possible options. Any prescription is subject to an individual clinical assessment.

For someone who has not had treatment before, I would generally allow three to four weeks before an important occasion.

Dermaplaning, Glow Facials and LED

Some treatments can be considered as individual sessions rather than as part of a longer programme.

Dermaplaning exfoliates, removing surface dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, leaving the skin feeling smoother. A Glow Facial can also be considered as a standalone treatment, depending on your skin’s needs.

LED light therapy with Dermalux Flex MD may be incorporated into a treatment plan to support skin recovery and comfort.

If you are looking for something to consider in the week or so before an occasion, these treatments may be suitable options following an assessment of your skin. Even with treatments that are generally lower in intensity, it is sensible to allow time to see how your skin responds, particularly if you have not had them before.

When it may be better to wait

Sometimes the best approach is to prepare the skin first rather than introduce a new treatment.

I may recommend delaying treatment if you have:

  • Active acne or inflammation that needs to be brought under control.
  • A flare of rosacea, eczema or dermatitis.
  • A compromised skin barrier, with stinging, dryness or sensitivity.
  • Recently started or changed prescription skincare, such as retinoids.
  • A history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where treatment planning needs additional care.
  • Pregnancy, when certain treatments, including microneedling, may not be appropriate.

In these situations, addressing the underlying skin concern first can help us make a more considered decision about subsequent treatments.

What if there isn’t enough time?

There is no need to feel that you have missed an opportunity if the timing isn’t right for in-clinic treatment.

A consistent skincare routine remains an important foundation for maintaining skin health. This generally means gentle cleansing, a moisturiser suited to your skin and the colder weather, daily SPF and avoiding unnecessary changes to your routine just before an important occasion.

In my experience, a simple routine used consistently is often more beneficial than introducing several new products at the last minute.

And remember, there is no deadline for looking after your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs:

  • How far ahead should I book a treatment before an event? It depends on the treatment and whether you have had it before. Some treatments can be considered a week or so beforehand, while others need several weeks or longer. The timing guide above provides a starting point and we can discuss your individual circumstances during your consultation.
  • Can I have a treatment the week before a special occasion? This depends on the treatment and your previous experience. I would generally advise against trying an entirely new treatment in the final week or two. For treatments you have had before, where we understand how your skin responds, it may sometimes be possible to plan closer to the date.
  • Is winter a good time to start skin treatments? Winter can be a suitable time for many treatments, although the choice depends on your skin and the treatment being considered. Daily SPF remains important throughout the year and some treatments require particular care with sun exposure.
  • Can I combine different skin treatments? Depending on your skin concerns and goals, a plan may involve more than one approach. For example, this could include microneedling to address skin texture, followed by a course of Sunekos to support skin quality, alongside an appropriate skincare routine. The treatments would be selected and timed according to your individual needs and how your skin responds. More treatments are not necessarily better; the aim is to choose the approaches that are most appropriate for your skin.
  • Can I wear make-up after a skin treatment? This depends on the treatment and how your skin responds. Some treatments require you to avoid make-up for a period afterwards to allow the skin to recover. I will advise you on the appropriate timing and aftercare in relation to the treatments that may be suitable for you.
  • What if I decide not to have treatment? That is entirely your choice. A consultation is there to help you understand your skin, discuss suitable options and make an informed decision. There is no obligation to proceed.

Planning Your Skin Treatments This Winter

The most useful question isn’t what treatment you can have before December. It is what your skin needs, what you would like to achieve and how best to plan for it.

During a Skin Confidence Consultation at Dr Maha Aesthetics, I take the time to understand your skin, your current skincare routine, previous treatments and any particular concerns or occasions you are planning around. We can then discuss suitable options, recovery and realistic timelines.

The plan may involve an individual treatment, a course of treatments or a combination of approaches, alongside preparing the skin where needed.

If you would like to discuss your skin and plan treatments for the winter months, you can book a Skin Confidence Consultation.

I look forward to welcoming you to Dr Maha Aesthetics.
