Skin boosters vs mesotherapy: what's the difference? Understanding injectable hyaluronic acid-based treatments, SuneKOS, Profhilo, and how to choose the right treatment for your skin.
"Skin booster" is one of the most searched terms in aesthetic medicine and also one of the most misunderstood.
In clinic, patients are often trying to understand what skin boosters actually do, what mesotherapy means, how they differ from dermal fillers, and how treatments such as SuneKOS® and Profhilo® compare.
These terms are frequently used interchangeably online, although they describe different injectable techniques and treatment approaches.

Skin boosters vs mesotherapy: what's the difference?
Core distinctions:
- Skin boosters: Skin boosters such as Profhilo® are injectable hyaluronic acid based treatments intended to support skin hydration and quality, including texture and elasticity.
- Mesotherapy: Mesotherapy is a broader injectable technique which involves delivery of active ingredients into the superficial dermis (upper layers of the skin) using multiple small injections. These ingredients may include amino acids, hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamins, and antioxidants. SuneKOS® is often grouped within mesotherapy due to its formulation and injection technique.
Neither skin boosters nor mesotherapy products work in the same way as dermal fillers, which are designed to add volume and support facial contours in areas affected by volume loss.
What is SuneKOS®?
SuneKOS® combines non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid and a patented blend of amino acids. These amino acids are involved in collagen and elastin pathways and have been studied for their role in supporting the skin's extracellular matrix (ECM).
What is the Extracellular Matrix (ECM)?
The ECM is the skin's natural support network consisting of:
- Collagen
- Elastin
- Hyaluronic acid
- Structural proteins
With intrinsic ageing, UV exposure, and environmental factors, these components gradually decline and become less organised. This contributes to thinner skin, reduced elasticity, fine lines, crepey texture, and dryness. SuneKOS® is used to support these skin changes over time. Clinically, improvements are typically subtle and gradual, reflecting changes in overall skin quality rather than structural or volume change.
SuneKOS® vs Profhilo®: Key Differences
Treatment selection is based on an individual assessment rather than product preference.
Profhilo® may be considered when:
- There is more generalised skin laxity
- Treatment is across larger areas such as full face or neck
- Hydration support is the main aim
SuneKOS® may be considered when:
- Concerns are more localised
- The under-eye area, around the mouth, or forehead are key focus points
- The skin is thinner or more delicate
- A more targeted and superficial approach is required
Of note: Whilst SuneKOS® may be used in areas such as the forehead due to more superficial placement and product characteristics, Profhilo® is not typically used in this area due to its spread profile, viscosity and injection technique required. As with all injectable treatments, there are potential risks and side effects which are discussed in full during consultation prior to treatment.
Treatment Protocol
Course intervals:
- Profhilo® course: 2 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart.
- SuneKOS® course: 3 treatment sessions, spaced approximately 2 weeks apart.
In some patients, treatments may be used as part of a staged or combined plan depending on clinical need.
How long do results last?
All injectable treatments are temporary. Skin ageing continues due to natural collagen loss, UV exposure, genetics, and lifestyle factors. Following a course of SuneKOS® or Profhilo®, you may notice gradual improvements in skin hydration and overall skin quality over the following weeks, with results varying depending on individual treatment response and skin concern.
Duration of effect varies between individuals, and maintenance treatments may be required. Results gradually reduce over time while the natural ageing process continues.
Downtime and recovery
Both SuneKOS® and Profhilo® are minimally invasive treatments. As with all injectable treatments: mild swelling may occur, redness is expected and temporary, and bruising can occur.
Downtime is usually short, but I recommend considering timing around social events due to possible bruising. Many patients are able to return to normal daily activities shortly afterwards, although individual recovery varies.
As with all injectable treatments, suitability depends on individual assessment, including skin quality, anatomy, medical history and treatment goals. Treatment may not be suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin infection or certain medical conditions and not all patients will be appropriate candidates.

- Can SuneKOS® or Profhilo® be done in summer? Yes. Both can be performed throughout the year, including summer. However, sun protection is important after treatment.
- Is SuneKOS® a filler? No. SuneKOS® does not create volume or change facial structure.
- Is Profhilo® a filler? Profhilo® is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment, but it is not designed to create the same volume or facial contour changes associated with traditional dermal fillers.
- Will my skin age worse if I stop treatment? No. Stopping treatment does not worsen ageing. The natural ageing process continues regardless of intervention.
- How quickly will I see results? Changes are gradual and typically develop over several weeks following a treatment course.
- Is there downtime? Minimal, although bruising can occur as with any injectable treatment. Suitability is discussed during consultation.
- Will the treatment hurt? Most patients tolerate treatment well. As the treatment involves multiple small injections, some discomfort can occur. Topical numbing cream may be used prior to treatment to improve comfort.
- Can SuneKOS® be used under the eyes? The under-eye area is one of the areas commonly discussed during consultation, particularly where concerns include fine lines, crepey texture or thin skin. Suitability depends on individual assessment.
